“Harry’s Inevitable Extinction”

By

Glenn Rolfe

“Are you nuts?”

Eddie dropped his cigar to the ground and crushed it beneath his alligator skin boot. “You want the job or not?”

Harry Pearson didn’t want this job—he was a private dick, not animal control or a Van Helsing—, but the rent wasn’t turning tricks or running a hot dog cart. “Yeah, fuck it. I’ll start tonight, but I want half up front.”

Eddie Cosby, a filthy rich East Texan by way of Shreveport, Louisiana and his Hilcorp oil company, pulled a thick clip of bills from inside his white dress coat, licked his sausage thumb, counted out several twenties and fifties, and tucked the money into the chest pocket of Harry’s checked shirt. “Two things,” Eddie said. “One, you get $500 to start.”

Harry didn’t bother checking the cash. Cosby was always good for it. He took his Stetson hat off and dusted it off against his jeans, ran a hand through his medium length hair and put the hat back in place. “What’s the other?”

The big man turned to toward the high noon sun before glancing back at Harry. “You better start now, while it’s still daylight.”

Harry walked to his Rambler and opened the door. “You really buying into this monster angle? Doesn’t seem like you.”

“Well, Harry, you take a look over the photos in that file sitting in your apartment and you might start thinking about what’s possible in the world and what ain’t.” Eddie Cosby climbed behind the seat of his Cadillac. “You’ll come to see why this one has got me locking all my doors at night. See ya, Harry. Call me if you find...anything.”

Harry watched the Caddy pull away through the cloud of dry Texas dust.

He spat and sunk into the Rambler’s seat, turned the key in the ignition and cranked the am/fm stereo. ZZ Top’s “La Grange” thumped its way through his veins, He dropped the car into Drive and tore off down the blacktop thinking about fangs, hairy beasts, and horror movies.

The witness statements were insane; the photos were goddamn terrifying.

The bodies were mangled. He’d never seen actual photos of people that had been eaten by animals. Victim after victim with their chest cavities hollowed out, appendages ravaged, and ligaments and bones that were never meant to be seen outside of an OR table or X-ray image on full display in each photo. Eddie’s lack of faith in the police finding out the truth behind these deaths made sense.

Eddie’s daughter’s photo was not included in the file, but the info in the coroner’s report in Eddie had obtained painted the gruesome picture just fine.

Nina Cosby was reported missing last month. Two weeks ago, the remains were discovered behind the Antler Transfer station off Highway 80. Like the other poor souls, her chest had been gnawed into, left hand bitten off, claw marks slashing her once pretty face into ribbons. On top of all that, she’d been violated. Not your average animal attack.

The microwave clock read: 2:27. Time was a wasting.

Harry tossed his hair back and grabbed his hat.
